INDUSTRY INVOLVEMENT
PRESTON HASKELL
Founder of The Haskell Company
Preston Haskell played an instrumental role in the formation of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). In 1993, design-build was still considered “nontraditional.” However, Haskell and his peers reasoned that design-build backers needed an organization to represent the interests of design-builders. DBIA recently celebrated their 25th anniversary.
In our 53-year history, we have grown into one of the most recognizable design-build firms in the country. Preston Haskell was one of the co-founders of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) and Peter Kinsley, Haskell’s Infrastructure & Transportation Group President, served as the 2015 DBIA President. Water Division Leader Bryan Bedell is the current chair of the DBIA Water Committee and President of the Water Design-Build Council (WDBC). We share these credentials solely to demonstrate our commitment to design-build and our expertise in this delivery method.

“Haskell delivered a quality, innovative project on schedule and below budget. Their ingenuity has allowed us to deliver pure, uncompromised drinking water without any doubt.” - Scott Kelly, Vice President, Water and Wastewater Systems, JEA “We would highly recommend Haskell to any organization contemplating a water project in their community. The true test of a successful project is not only delivering to a specification, but understanding the needs of the customer and exceeding their expectations. Your team truly understood our needs and exceeded our expectations.” - Robert Farley, City Administrator, City of Live Oak “This project has gone extremely well so far. In my 35+ years of experience I have never seen a project of this magnitude go so well. This is a testament to our design and construction management team. We made the right choices.” - Jim Bruner, Engineer, Glynn County “Haskell was an outstanding contractor. Extremely safe jobsite, excellent QC, very well managed. All contract and construction submittals were on time or early. Haskell truly raised the bar.” - Joshua M. Carnahan, Naval Construction Manager, NAVFAC

PROJECT EXPERIENCE
The project consisted of the main production facility, auxiliary buildings and a new industrial pretreatment facility to treat wastewater flows generated by the operation of a Greek yogurt manufacturing plant. Wastewater generated from the yogurt process is pretreated to meet discharge limits prior to entering the Town of Batavia municipal wastewater system. Haskell was selected again when this facility was purchased by HP Hood and repurposed into a milk production plant. The wastewater pretreatment system had to be modified to meet new more stringent levels for phosphorous removal. A new bio –P tank and recirculation pumps were installed.

LIDESTRI FOODS | Pennsauken, NJ
Haskell was selected to design and construct a new wastewater pretreatment system for LiDestri at their Pennsauken, NJ facility. The facility had been experiencing high levels of BOD/COD and pH variations that caused them to receive an administrative consent order to implement treatment. The owner had purchased equipment for another facility that Haskell was able to utilize to help keep the capital cost down.

CITY OF VENICE, FL | Venice, FL
The Haskell Company and McKim & Creed partnered to create a specialized team that offered the City of Venice unmatched progressive design-build experience, expert membrane design and implementation experience, construction self-performance, creative innovation, cost competitiveness and best value. This project consisted of the replacement of four 1.1 mgd reverse osmosis (RO) skids. The RO system is a single-stage design which will operate at 50% recovery, with the ability to expand to a two-stage, higher recovery system in the future. The project also includes the installation of four new 150 HP vertical turbine can pumps, each with variable frequency drives. Additionally, four replacement stainless steel, horizontally mounted cartridge filter vessels are included.

FRITO LAY | Frankfort, IN
Haskell designed and built a 208,000 SF facility provided space for offices, refrigerated and non-refrigerated warehouse areas and receiving, processing and packaging stations. A subsequent program added an additional 114,000 SF of warehouse distribution space to the original facility. A later expansion added 14 new truck bays. The Haskell Industrial Water team designed the oily waste pump station and integrated the owner selected oil water separator to achieve better performance.

BUSH BROTHERS & COMPANY | Dandridge, TN
The project had four (4) major goals: (1) organically treat the vegetable wastewater to a high degree of purity, (2) reduce the demands on source water, (3) enable future alternatives disposal of the balance of treated wastewater and (4) sustainably capture methane through anaerobic digestion for use in the canning facility. The team collaborated on multiple design alternatives and comprehensive procurement strategies to deliver $10 million in savings to BB&C. This important, socially responsible project was delivered on time and below the GMP amount. It gives BB&C greater sustainability and management over its level of water use.

CONFIDENTIAL CLIENT | Allentown, PA
Haskell provided design-build services for our client’s primary WWTF in a new precast building constructed adjacent to the existing maintenance building. This project includes a manhole/lift station so wastewater can be transferred from the existing underground tank to the new area. The process will be maintained separate from restroom sanitary by providing a new underground process wastewater sewer from the production area to the new WWTF building and to secondary treatment. A new lift station was installed near the new primary treatment building. The flow passes through two (2) new high capacity rotary drum screens. Wastewater is pumped to a large equalization tank and then on to treatment in the DAF/gas energy mixing units. The existing sanitary sewers remained as is to handle the restroom and locker room wastewater. The wastewater streams are combined at secondary near the anaerobic lagoon.

Design-Build Project Delivery Site Evaluation Complete A/E Design Self-Performed Concrete Steel Fabrication
Big Lots contracted Haskell to build a new 1.3M SF warehouse and distribution facility to service the entire West Coast Region. This new, enormous facility was compromised of full-height, self-performed, tilt-up concrete panels as well as steel columns, joists, and girders. In order to overcome some additional location-related challenges, we utilized roof decking made from oriented strand board (OSB) for its seismic advantages. We installed a cantilevered, full-height, tilt-up, three-hour separation wall bisecting the building’s center to provide additional fire protection. Environmentally friendly features like occupancy-sensor lighting earned this project a LEED v3.0 Certification In all, Haskell has completed four projects with Big Lots totaling over 7M SF in facility space

BENTLY HERITAGE
Bently Heritage contracted Haskell to help them convert two historic facilities into high proof, craft distilleries complete with grain handling, process piping, multiple stills, fermenting tanks, and packaging lines. With four independently operating distillation systems, these facilities required a complex process network that included more than seven miles of piping, over 80 vessels, and both traditional and nontraditional aging environments. Our virtual design and construction teams integrated models from all disciplines to ensure the constructability of the building and processing systems prior to installation. This identified hundreds of conflicts that we were able to subsequently mitigate prior to encountering the impacts to time and cost in the field.

In-N-Out Burger contracted Haskell to design and construct a full-scale facility to house its operations, warehouse, and processing operations so that they could keep up with growing operations and demand in Texas. This project was executed with an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) delivery method. The new facility included a main building and three support buildings, all built on a fully developed, 20-acre greenfield site. The 126,000 SF main building is highlighted by 27,000 SF of high-end meat production and 4,200 SF of liquid processing which work together to produce fresh product for delivery to nearby stores. The site scope consisted of 118 on-grade concrete auto spaces and tractor trailer parking, concrete paved drive lanes, and loop roadways for fire department access. The stainless industrial facility is juxtaposed by a Spanish themed administration office.
