Borowy Family Children’s Critical Care Tower at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville
One major project identified by Baptist Health Downtown Campus Facility Master Plan was the Wolfson’s Children’s Hospital Critical Care Tower and Baptist Health Entry Pavilion.
The building serves the dual purpose of creating a new arrival and public entry for the entire Baptist Health Downtown Campus while replacing and expanding the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units for Wolfson Children’s Hospital.
"Every aspect of the Critical Care Tower was designed with patients and families in mind."
Michael D. Aubin, FACHE
President of Wolfson Children's Hospital
Parking
The project includes the relocation of major subsurface utilities and the demolition of the old, existing P2 parking structure. The project along with the new P2 parking structure creates a new face for the Downtown Campus.

The grid background is pinned which means it is fixed to a specific point in the viewport. Pinning an object allows you to keep the objects always visible on the canvas, regardless of where the user scrolls on the canvas.
Note: Pinned objects do not currently work on full-height embedded experiences; only standalone experience and scrolling embedded experiences.
To unpin select the group, next to the X,Y coordinates click the pin icon.
Hover interactions allow you to reveal or hide folders, objects, or groups when the user hovers their mouse over your specified trigger.
To add a hover interaction, draw a hotspot over the area you want the user to hover. Select the hotspot and navigate to the Interaction tab in the Inspector Panel. Select “hover” as your trigger and specify the action, which can be: show, hide, show and stay visible, or hide and stay hidden. Finally, choose the folder, object, or group you want to reveal or hide.
Arrival
The first two floors of the building create a new, grand Entry Lobby and Welcome Center and house the administrative offices for Wolfson Children’s Hospital long with conference space, a donor recognition installation, and other supporting functions. A pedestrian skybridge links the new lobby and entry space to the recently completed P2 Parking Structure. Entry from the bridge into the building presents one with a dramatic view of the entire lobby with a grand staircase leading from the mezzanine to the first floor of the lobby.
Patient & Family Experience
Creating an enhanced patient and family experience was a main driver of the design effort. Every step in the patient and family journey as carefully considered and crafted to provide for their physical and emotional needs. The journey begins before they reach the facility with considerations of wayfinding, parking, pedestrian access and continues with specialty family waiting areas, key amenities and patient rooms that accommodate parents and families for the typically long duration stays required for these patients.
Staff Respite
The same attention given to the patient and family experience was applied to supporting the staff. Each patient unit is comprised of numerous four-bed clusters with sub-nursing stations providing direct observation of the patients. Supplies and other care supporting components are decentralized to minimize steps for the staff. In addition, areas of respite are provided for staff with breakrooms providing views and natural light, on-call suites and other amenities.
Art in Architecture
The visual impact of the project is apparent when you approach the building or enter the lobby.
Technology
The project utilizes technology for clinical areas and individual patient information.
Brand
The new building improves the brand identity and presence along the busy I-95 corridor.
Art in Architecture
The integration of art and architecture was envisioned from the inception of the project. Five original pieces were commissioned for the building including the premier installation in the two -story atrium is an aethereal, reflecting light piece by renowned artist Soo Sunny Park. In addition to the commissioned art there are over 200 other pieces carefully placed throughout the facility. Each patient unit has a biome theme such as a farm, forest, grassland, or ocean and a corresponding mural at each elevator entry to the unit. These elements assist in wayfinding while adding warm, delight, distraction, contemplation and comfort to families, pediatric patients and staff alike.
Technology
As with the art installations, technology was seamlessly integrated to support clinical excellence, create a responsive, healing environment and enhance the patient and family experience. Specific systems include Philips Lotus System, Get Well Network, and other information and entertainment systems. State-of-the-art equipment and technology support advanced workflows and provide needed resources for physicians and clinical teams, with minimal infant disruption. Other special features include cycle lighting for the NICU units and significant sound attenuation throughout all the patient units. Specific clinical enhancements include NICU MRI, burn care, etc.
Brand
The new building has become the "front door" to the hospital’s downtown campus and represents the values of the healthcare system. The true impact goes beyond the building’s aesthetics. The facility’s functional changes and the physical environment created –all things big and small – made to better serve patients, their families, the public and employees is the real success of the project. Bringing all of this together in one addition enhances the Baptist Health and Wolfson Children’s Hospital brand which reflects caring, community service and clinical excellence.
