Giving Back Matters
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
Haskell regularly provides more than $1.5 million and thousands of hours to philanthropic causes, but 2022 was a year when we made large, directed commitments to two areas of focus, the relief of human suffering (Red Cross after Ian) and diversity and inclusion (Together Strong Community Fund to combat bias). Could you comment on the importance of Haskell providing leadership and funding in those areas? In times of need, it’s important for Haskell to be a community leader. That’s who we are, and it speaks directly to our culture and to our values. Ian was a devastating hurricane that caused great destruction and severely impacted many lives. Haskell is about finding ways to support the relief of human suffering, and that’s what we did. We also supported the Together Strong Community Fund, which is using education and conversation to combat bias. That again speaks directly to Haskell’s mission of creating a working environment and community with greater inclusivity. Also, I’ve made a commitment personally to the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, and we are committed to having a diverse and inclusive organization, which makes us a better company. Again, this year, Haskell undertook a record-setting United Way drive. Could you reflect on that generosity and what it means? Our 2022 United Way campaign was a huge success. “Creating a Better Future” was our theme, and our team members did just that for people across the community. The United Way really provides a collective opportunity for us as Haskell to make meaningful change in our communities. We have a rich and longstanding tradition of supporting the United Way, and there’s not much we can do that’s more rewarding or meaningful than supporting the profound impact the United Way has on so many people and organizations. Haskell gives each team member four paid hours per month to do volunteer work. Discuss why this is important. That’s really about walking the walk when you talk the talk. It’s about creating the opportunity for our team members to give back to our communities and make an impact. Our team members want to do that. If we are going to say, ‘This is who we are, and this is our culture,’ we need to provide a vehicle to make that happen, or they’re just empty words. This is about providing our team time to dedicate to improving our communities. On the whole, how do you view our team members’ generosity with their time and talent? The dedication of time and talent I see from our team members is just off the charts. It’s phenomenal. But then again, I’m confident that it’s in our DNA. It’s part of what Haskell is. It’s part of the culture that’s been ingrained at Haskell for many years. Our impact needs to be bigger than simply the work we do every day. Because our reach is so broad, our impact can and should be, too. It’s a global impact. Finally, could you discuss the impact that Haskell has on the communities it serves? We could be in 100 communities across the globe at any particular time. We could go in, build a project and do it well and leave. But how much more rewarding is it to know that we made a greater impact and did things that were able to better that community? That’s the impact this organization has, and it’s a privilege to have that opportunity.

“Supporting HabiJax and our community are some of Haskell’s great traditions. Few things are more rewarding than helping families in need with realizing their dream of home ownership.”
Across the enterprise, team members lend a hand to Habitat each year to build and rehabilitate homes, bringing people together to ensure everyone can live in safe, decent and affordable housing. Volunteering with Habitat is a hand-up for low-income families to get a feeling of belonging in the community and a sense of pride in their homes.

Education and youth enrichment are the cornerstones for building bright futures and prosperous communities. Team members are passionate about seeking opportunities to make a positive impact in the lives of local youth. Company-sponsored mentoring activities tend to focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs that promote future careers in architecture, engineering and construction fields.
The children of 15 Haskell team members received this year’s Haskell Sholarship Awards. The four-year academic scholarships totaling $6,000 are awarded to children of eligible team members for undergraduate studies at accredited colleges, universities and post-secondary vocational and trade schools. Since the scholarship program was created in 2003, Haskell has awarded more than $322,000 in scholarships to more than 145 of its team members’ college-aged children. The program was expanded in 2017 to include rising college or trade school sophomores to reward those who excelled in their first year of post-high school instruction.

Students from the ACE Mentor Programs at Orange Park High School and Middleburg High School recently visited the Haskell project to renovate Hangar 101 at Naval Air Station Jacksonville. After the students heard about the career paths of the four Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) escorts, Haskell’s field team, including Assistant Superintendent Danny Bryant and Senior Project Controls Analyst Brian Barrett, led the students on site tours and discussed the challenging renovation of the 89,000-square-foot hangar, one of the original structures when the facility was commissioned in 1940. The ACE Mentor Program is a nationwide program designed to interest students in pursuing careers within the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry. Haskell was a founding sponsor of Ace Mentor Program of Northeast Florida, one of 75 chapters across the nation.

As 2022 graduates of the Northeast Florida Builders Association (NEFBA) Apprenticeship Program, Matthew Koziolek and Ethan Weiskircher became two of Haskell’s newest journeyman carpenters. They’re also shining examples of how to make the most of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) system. Haskell and NEFBA are heavily invested in the Clay CTE program, and those ties provided the pipeline to the apprenticeship program and their new employer.

“At Haskell, our culture not only extends to our team members but also to their families. The strengths, accomplishment, and community impact from volunteerism of the applicants were extremely impressive. We are proud to recognize these students and wish them the best with their academic success.”
For the 12th consecutive year, Haskell team members were proud to design and administer the SkillsUSA Carpentry Championship, at the Georgia World Conference Center in Atlanta. SkillsUSA is a nonprofit national education association serving middle-school, high-school and college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled-service occupations. More than a dozen team members contributed to the effort, and half of them represented Haskell in Atlanta, including David Bates, Tim Mosley, Cody Yax, Michael McLauchlan, Sarah Richards and Chris Bunch.

Education and youth enrichment are key to building brilliant futures and prosperous communities. Our culture has been one to seek opportunities to make a positive impact in the lives of local youth. Partnerships with local schools and programs focused on design, engineering, or construction have yielded positive alliances and long-standing friendships with young students.

Haskell team members volunteered to clean and prepare a new enclosure at the Oakland, California, Zoo for incoming kangaroos, wallabies and wallaroos. Oakland Zoo’s wallabies previously were victims of the illegal wildlife trade and were illegally owned by a private citizen who surrendered them to avoid increased legal action. Oakland Zoo will now provide the animals a forever home where they will receive the highest quality care.

Tracey Friley enthusiastically inspires others to “jump in” and get involved with the community – especially in activities tied to mentoring, educating and helping children identify their creative passion. Tracey has been associated with the Jacksonville, Florida, ACE (Architecture, Construction and Engineering) Mentor Program since 2008, serving as Lead Mentor with STEM-focused high school and middle school programs and, currently, as a member of the board of directors. She also regularly serves as a mentor and leader with Haskell’s High School Internship Program and has been the event organizer for several job-shadowing programs over the years. With her background in architecture and interior design, Tracey often shares her perspectives and insights with academia, diversity organizations and students. She has served on the Advisory Board for University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Construction and Design and was its Design Guest Critic and Juror, Studio IV. Giving back to younger students, she spent several years participating with “Architect Barbie” workshops to foster children’s understanding of spatial relationships by asking them to design Architect Barbie’s Dream House. Beyond the multiple mentoring efforts, including Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Tracey can be found sharing “sweat equity” with her annual participation with the “Green Apple Day of Service” (GADoS) project. Every September, Haskell works with a selected school and its administration, teachers, students and parents to design and execute “sustainable” site improvement project. These projects involve hands-on activity, including beautifying landscapes, painting walls and halls, installing raised garden beds and composting stations. Tracey enthusiastically leads the team while helping to educate the students and teachers along the way. Tracey was recently honored with the President’s Award by the Jacksonville chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). This prestigious award is bestowed on an architect who has made outstanding contributions to the profession and service to the community. She served on the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation, which raises funds to support programs that benefit economically and socially disadvantaged youth, families and other NFL charitable initiatives. Based on her involvement in community initiatives, she was selected for and completed the prestigious Leadership Jacksonville Program in 2019.

Since December 2003, Guillermo Carrillo has led efforts to improve the lives of orphans in Mexico City who are living with HIV. It has been a passion project for him and his family, and several Haskell team members in the Latin America (LATAM) region have embraced it, too. Ser Hermano, A.C., is the organization that houses and supports these children, and the demands are extensive given the number of orphans they serve. In addition to housing, the fundraising goes to support the purchase of clothing and basic supplies needed by the children, including socks, underwear, shirts, pants, medical supplies, toiletries, food and toys. Guillermo and his family have been hands-on with their support, and with a recent move of the children’s home location, they have gone to visit the site and participated in activities like painting with the children and delivering toys and gifts. LATAM team members have been touched by these efforts and have given generously to support the organization that provides love and shelter to the children who otherwise would have nothing.

Very focused on infusing service in all aspects of his life, Nathan Peters embraces the opportunity to act as a Project Manager on jobs that serve his faith in communities throughout the world. He is regarded by supervisors, peers and community members as the embodiment of a “servant leader,” and every facet of his career, family life, church and volunteer efforts reflects this commitment. Nathan loves to participate in volunteer activities that support the well-being of others, and he finds ways to serve through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (JCLDS) as well as directly with aid organizations. Whether organizing relief efforts after devastating earthquakes in Urdaneta and Tan regions of the Philippines, championing food and blood drives (Red Cross) or supplying holiday meals to the hungry, Nathan loves giving back. In the local community of Urdaneta Philippines, where Nathan and his young family currently reside, his construction management background is helping locals to build sustainable living quarters and other facilities to improve the quality of life. With the JCLDS Church also benefiting from his leadership on projects, it is a winning proposition for all involved.
