Giving Back Matters
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
How does Haskell’s Core Value of Service to clients, the community and each other influence our company’s culture? I think team members get excited about being able to take what they do professionally and give it back to the community. I often say that there’s “what we do,” then there’s “why we do it.” It’s important to our strategy that we integrate both of those, and one of the big ways we do that is to give our team members the opportunity to make an impact in the community where they work and the world where we live. Gradually and carefully, our team members returned to in-person participation in community service. You participated in the HabiJax construction. What did that mean to you? There’s nothing like actual person-to-person human interaction. At Haskell, our business model is founded on the fact that the magic happens when you integrate, and the way you truly are best able to collaborate and integrate is to work together in-person. That applies to giving back to the communities where we work and live around the world. Witnessing the joy of a grandmother and her grandchildren receiving a new home defines Haskell’s value of Service. Haskell and its team members have contributed more than $4.5 million in 25+ years of participation in United Way campaigns. What does that participation and relationship mean to our organization? We’ve improved lives. We’ve improved communities. We talk about Creating Things That Matter. That is a prime example. The relationship with the United Way is a deep one. It dates back more than 50 years, and it remains consistent. The United Way does so much good and has a phenomenal impact on communities and families and initiatives. There’s a very natural alignment between the United Way’s mission and ours. As we grow as a company, how is the magnitude of our community impact affected? Growing in scale allows us to do more impactful things. Growing in scale has also meant expanding geographically, and with 23 offices through the U.S. and significant operations in Asia and Latin America, we’re working in more than 100 communities at any given time. To think of the difference we can make in that many communities is incredible and rewarding. How does our institutional emphasis on service unite our fast-growing company? It is hard to scale the feeling of a family business without emphasizing service. Through service as a team, we can extend a feeling of who we are and create togetherness. The Core Value of Service brings people together. Team members who may not work together, who may not even know each other, come together to do something meaningful. What are your final thoughts for the team regarding their impact on the communities we serve? I’m amazed by the commitment and willingness to grasp the connection of “what we do” to “why we do it” and really live the Core Value of Service. The word that comes to me is “pride.” You can be in the community, and someone will ask, “Where do you work?” When you say, “I work for Haskell,” they’ll say, “Oh, that’s a great company.” But they have no idea of our reach around the world. They probably don’t understand the AEC business. If you ask them what markets we serve, they’ll say, “I’m not exactly sure, but I know you’re a great company.” That is because of the impact and influence of what we put into the community to make it better.

United Way & Habitat for Humanity
Team members across all office and field locations participated in the annual United Way Campaign. Tirelessly led by co-chairs, Kevin Crump and Teri Williams, the campaign raised a grand total of $278,000 to positively impact the communities where we live and work.

Team members decorated and filled over 300 snack packs to help alleviate child hunger in local communities. The bags were customized with artwork, stickers, and inspirational hand-written notes of encouragement for the recipients to enjoy along with their nutritional meal. Working with United Way, the final products were deployed to students through local school networks in multiple locations.

“Supporting HabiJax and our community are some of Haskell’s great traditions. Few things are more rewarding than helping families in need with realizing their dream of home ownership.”
Across the enterprise, team members lend a hand to Habitat each year to build and rehabilitate homes, bringing people together to ensure everyone can live in safe, decent and affordable housing. Volunteering with Habitat is a hand-up for low-income families to get a feeling of belonging in the community and a sense of pride in their homes.

Education and youth enrichment are the cornerstones for building bright futures and prosperous communities. Team members are passionate about seeking opportunities to make a positive impact in the lives of local youth. Company-sponsored mentoring activities tend to focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs that promote future careers in architecture, engineering and construction fields.
Since the scholarship program was created in 2003, Haskell has awarded over $300,000 to more than 130 of its team members’ college-aged children. The program was expanded in 2017 to include rising college or trade school sophomores to reward those who excelled in their first year of post-high school instruction. Awarded on several merit factors including academic, leadership and community involvement, 14 deserving children of Haskell team members received scholarships to use toward their undergraduate studies in 2021.
Haskell's Annual Scholarship Program
Located across the United States, the award-winning ACE Mentor Program helps high school students explore potential careers in architecture, construction and engineering. Program participants are guided through real-life projects that incorporate aspects of design and construction, giving them well-rounded exposure to the exciting career possibilities available in the AEC industry. Several Haskell team members in Jacksonville have been involved with ACE for well over a decade. Jacob Thurlow, who has received national recognition for his leadership, is deeply involved with Creekside High School’s ACE Program, which has generated Haskell’s High School Internship Program (H-SIP). Gaining momentum, this program is shaping the futures for several talented youth to study architecture, engineering or construction in college. Denise Ramsey, another long-time mentor, currently serves on the National Board of ACE and uses her experience to positively affect the direction of all chapters across the country.

Opportunities to engage students through corporate partnerships are what happens with Big Brothers Big Sisters’ “Beyond School Walls” program. Haskell enjoys a longstanding partnership with this workplace mentoring program that pairs team members with students for one-to-one mentoring. Normally an onsite mentoring activity, we have successfully navigated to a virtual program with mentors (Bigs) continuing to build strong ties with mentees (Littles) over the course of two to three years.

“We take great pride in supporting the children of our team members by assisting them in achieving their educational goals. The commitment to success shown by this year’s applicants in their educational goals and their contributions to their communities through volunteerism – all during a worldwide pandemic – is truly impressive. We recognize that education is not only essential for our continued success, but it also benefits the communities where our team members and customers live and work.”
With a mission of empowering members to become world-class workers, leaders and responsible American citizens, SkillsUSA utilizes a framework that develops personal, workplace and technical skills through academics and mentoring. Haskell has been involved with this effort for several decades and Tim Mosley, Senior Manager of Field Personnel, is both a product of and mentor with this program. As a freshman at Orange Park High School, Tim signed up for two construction electives – carpentry and electrical. As fate would have it, he was assigned to the carpentry unit and immediately found his calling. Over time, he was exposed to a craft apprenticeship program that led to his career with Haskell following high school. Tim now gives back in multiple ways by serving as advisor and mentor to local high schools with programs in carpentry, welding, HVAC, drafting and electrical.

Education and youth enrichment are key to building brilliant futures and prosperous communities. Our culture has been one to seek opportunities to make a positive impact in the lives of local youth. Partnerships with local schools and programs focused on design, engineering, or construction have yielded positive alliances and long-standing friendships with young students.
In May, team members in the Livermore office donated their time by working with Kids Against Hunger to pack shelf-stable meals to feed 5,184 kids. Kids Against Hunger is a non-profit humanitarian organization with the mission of providing fully nutritious food to impoverished children and families around the world.

In December 2021, catastrophic tornadoes tore through western Kentucky, destroying homes and livelihoods across hundreds of miles. The city of Mayfield in Graves County sustained extensive infrastructure damage leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power, heat, and clean water. Donations of desperately needed items were generously collected and transported to the Graves County Fire Department in support of Team Western Kentucky Tornado Relief Fund.

The Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon is the region’s premier running event and the largest fundraiser benefiting the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum. The event is dedicated to the remembrance of “those who were killed, those who survived and those changed forever by the tragic events of the Oklahoma City bombing.” For over a decade, our team has volunteered at this event by sponsoring the water stop, which provides cold water for those running in the event. #RuntoRemember

“It was amazing that [Janel] took the time to visit an inner-city school and cared about what my dreams were. That has always left a lasting impression on me and also inspired me to be an ACE mentor, where I serve as a board member now.”
A talented watercolorist and urban sketcher, Chris Flagg, Vice President of I&T AE Operations, is a founder of the Jacksonville Urban Sketchers. The group’s purpose is to encourage people to express themselves, and the world around them, through sketching. Chris enjoys sharing his expertise, organizing and leading fellow Haskell team members on “sketch crawls.” During the COVID-19 lockdown, he authored a series called “Just Face It,” painting a face of a famous person every day, an endeavor that was the topic of a feature article in the Florida Times-Union.

According to his team, Cesar lives Haskell’s values in all he does. Not only does he deliver safety to every assigned project, but he also goes beyond to ensure that all team members and their families are safe outside of day-to-day activities. When COVID-19 impacted several field team members on a project, he stepped in to take over the role of Construction Manager, allowing others to rest and recover. During the same period, he used his personal time to purchase and deliver necessities to quarantined teammates and their families. These efforts did not go unnoticed, and Cesar was presented with Haskell’s “Living the Values” award in recognition for his exemplary commitment to our values of Team, Excellence, Service and Trust. As the Manager of Haskell’s Safety Program on The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (JCLDS) projects, Cesar oversaw an effort that helped produce 14 million manhours without a single lost-time injury (LTI). When the JCLDS Urdaneta project received a prestigious Safety Seal Certificate from the Philippines government, Cesar wanted to make sure his teammates felt appreciation for their hard work. Taking personal time during the holidays, he “hit the road” by car and plane, visiting teams and their families in the Philippines and Mexico. Video calls were scheduled with the families he was unable to visit personally.
