Message From The CEO
As I think about what brings the most meaning to what we do, the opportunity to serve others is what comes to mind. With the core value of ‘Service’ at the heart of Haskell’s values, I am very pleased to share this annual report that highlights some of the exceptional ways our team members share their time, talent, and resources with deserving charities and worthwhile activities. As Haskell continues to expand its footprint and reach, I am so pleased that team members around the world are actively embracing opportunities to positively impact the lives of others.
Things That Matter
GIVING BACK
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
For over 50 years, Haskell has been profoundly committed to philanthropy, community, and giving back. Civic engagement is embedded in our culture and exemplified by passionate team members who serve as participants, leaders, and champions for acts of service. Haskell’s philanthropic leadership extends to corporate giving, where 3% of profits are donated to charitable causes – nearly fourfold the national average. Our giving focuses on the arts, public education, and relief of human suffering, but it also extends to other worthwhile causes and charities, including youth enrichment and sustainability. Team members embody our values of Team, Excellence, Service, and Trust. With record participation, team members donated over $270,000 during the annual United Way campaign. These contributions were significant and have a positive effect on many communities Haskell serves. Sharing time, talent, and resources are just as important as financial support. During 2019, team members generously shared 32,000 hours with over 370 worthwhile organizations and causes. In recognition of these volunteer efforts, Haskell was again named one of Jacksonville’s “Companies with Heart” by Jacksonville Magazine. Art and culture are essential to any community’s quality of life, and our legacy has been to support and promote these resources for people to enjoy. The support of education and mentoring at-risk youth remains a priority. We continue to partner with individual schools and programs to inform and teach students to expand their view of future career and life opportunities. Many of these efforts, including ACE Mentoring, STEM-focused programs, and Construction Career Academies, are highlighted in this report. Many team members also serve as leaders for youth enrichment programs such as Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts of America or coaching youth athletics. With any of these endeavors, we are providing guidance and building life skills for future generations. Time and care shared with young people truly matters. Environmental sustainability is integral to Haskell’s philosophy, and team members can be found cleaning up school grounds and parks, educating communities about resource management, or journeying through the jungle to provide sustainable lighting to indigenous communities. In recent years, sustainability initiatives, including the Green Apple Day of Service program, have received recognition and commendation for creating healthy spaces for students to learn and thrive. Keeping wellness in mind, many Haskell team members focus on health and fitness to bring awareness and raise funds for important causes. Whether participating in the annual American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, biking to support Multiple Sclerosis research, or running a marathon for breast cancer, they continue to find innovative ways to support important causes. Team members are passionate about animal welfare, sharing resources, and bringing comfort to those without a voice. And with numerous veterans working at Haskell, we are proud of their service and continue to support others in active duty or those coming into civilian life with initiatives like Operation New Uniform. During my time with Haskell, I continue to marvel at the spirit of giving that exists across our incredible organization. Our team members’ commitment to service and sharing goodwill is what makes Haskell such a special place to work. It is integral to our culture and represents the heart of what we do – provide service and create things that matter. Thank you for giving back and making the world a better place.
James L. O'Leary
President & Chief Executive Officer
Across our company, we find creative and fun ways to serve the underserved in our communities. For several years, we have given back to charities – both big and small – in meaningful ways.
GIVING
Haskell Women’s Network hosted a company-wide winter event to support a women’s charity in each office location. Tying the holiday season to Haskell’s core values, the goal was to have a fun activity to promote the spirit of giving in the communities we serve. With a theme of “Favorite Things BOGO (Bring One, Give One)” – Doing Things That Matter to Support Women’s Charities – each office selected a charity and collected items to share that would benefit the recipients. The response was outstanding, and Haskell’s women were able to network while providing needed items to deserving women and families.
HASKELL WOMEN'S NETWORK "BOGO" EVENT
Several offices took part in supporting The Salvation Army during the past year. Oklahoma City designed and built another award-winning structure for CANstruction – the “Food Can Spaceman” – which was named the People’s Choice Winner! This annual event helps fight hunger in Central Oklahoma. Team members from both Jacksonville and Oklahoma City took to “ringing the bells” to raise funds for the services provided by the local Salvation Army. Catalyst team members supported the Angel Tree, through which families register children to receive new Christmas presents. The team volunteered to organize presents and make the holidays brighter for deserving kids.

Charlotte, NC, Oklahoma City, OK and Jacksonville, FL
Several successful toy drives took place during the holidays. The St. Louis office participated in a local “Rocking a Stocking” event to design and create stockings, as well as to take donations for a toy drive to benefit Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital. Jacksonville team members annually participate in the local Children’s Christmas Party by collecting toys, volunteering for party set-up and then handing out toys on party day to thousands of underserved children in Northeast Florida. Rick Craven and our team at the Boynton Beach Town Hall project collected toys for the local “Toys for Tots” giveaway.

TOY DRIVES
While several team members actively support Habitat for Humanity as individuals, our Beloit, Oklahoma City, and Atlanta offices organized group volunteer activities with this outstanding program in 2019. Depending on the office, various skills were put into play, and we are proud to support this organization that builds places to call home for deserving families.
UNITED WAY
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
We are very pleased to announce that our company-wide United Way campaign raised over $270,000 for United Way partners in 2019. Haskell’s connection to local communities where we operate led to a very successful campaign, and the added competition led by Co-Chairs Charlotte Haines and Ryan Hollister helped bolster a record 662 participants!

# OF PARTICIPANTS
Several offices support their local food banks, and these efforts are deeply appreciated by the communities and families being served. The Atlanta office volunteered with the Atlanta Community Food Bank, and the packaging team was able to put their experience to work by sorting and packing boxes of goods that were later distributed to shelters, churches, schools, and families. The team in Beloit donated 23,000 diapers and 25 children’s coats to Caritas, the local food pantry. This donation stocked the diaper bank for all of 2019! The Catalyst team in Charlotte regularly volunteers with Friendship Trays to prepare meals for delivery. Jacksonville team members broke out their Thanksgiving recipes for the “Side Dish Cook-Off” to raise money and canned goods for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Florida. Benham’s Oklahoma City office donated time and resources to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s “Backpacks for Kids” program to support children during weekends and holidays. The Nashville team donated food items for the United Way of Williamson County’s “Full Tummies, Warm Hearts” food drive.

Alejandra "Ale" Alvarez
Jacksonville, FL
Teresa Lewis
LATIN AMERICA REGION
Her Volunteerism is Every Single Day. Alejandra is a person who was born with the “gene” of kindness and generosity. Before she became an animal protector, many of her charitable efforts were focused on helping people who needed financial and emotional support. Her focus broadened when “Ale” had a pet that became an important member of her family. They shared a strong bond, and when her “fur baby” died from illness, she chose to honor its life by helping abandoned animals that were not being adopted because they were on the street and/or had a disability. She started by adopting an abandoned kitten, and successively added more pets that needed love and a caring environment. Over time, she has adopted 17 animals - including many with special needs – and they have all become healthy and loving beings. Alejandra also spends much of her free time working with associations dedicated to the protection, rescue, and adoption of animals. The number of living beings that have benefitted from her love and care is countless, and every day that number grows.
Jacob Thurlow
JACKSONVILLE, FL
Since joining Haskell, Jacob has been very involved with community service and has a passion for serving others, especially youth. Most of his service activities over the years have revolved around education and mentoring. He has been a part of the Northeast Florida ACE Mentor Program since its inception in 2006 — first as a mentor, then a team leader, then a board member. He now is serving a two-year term as board chairman. Jacob currently serves on the Advisory Board for Creekside High School’s Academy of Engineering & Environmental Sciences and the Bartram Trail’s Design Academy. Additionally, he volunteers at both schools for various events such as judging student presentations, assisting with mock interviews, and helping with Academy nights. Jacob created our formal high school intern program in 2018 and has led it since. We hosted ten high school interns in 2019, and the feedback has been outstanding. Jacob does everything he can to ensure the experience is meaningful for all involved – both the students and their assigned sponsors have appreciated the opportunities to work together. Other volunteer activities include participating in the Green Apple Day of Service (GADoS) since 2013, leading the United Way campaign in 2015, serving on Big Brothers Big Sisters “Beyond School Walls” for several years and currently, as a member of the Meninak Club, he participates in the scholarship committee and leads the charitable grant committee. A Jacksonville native, Jacob is also a devoted father to two young boys and can be found coaching youth soccer. Although he says the boys are becoming too advanced, we suspect Jacob will be found coaching them – and others – in many other ways for years to come!
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK
Every office has someone who likes to remain “behind the scenes,” yet their participation and passion for giving back extend to all activities attached to community service. With several volunteer activities planned with the Oklahoma City team, Teresa Lewis is the one person who signs up for everything that takes place. According to her team members, Teresa suggested and successfully organized the Salvation Army “Bell Ringing” opportunity for Oklahoma City in 2019. She also participates and volunteers annually with the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and Habitat for Humanity’s “Build Day.” Teresa loves to give back to children and fight hunger by participating in Food Bank of Oklahoma’s “Backpacks for Kids” program that provides kid-friendly and nutritious food to sustain children over weekends and school holidays. She also volunteers and takes food to the Ronald McDonald House. Additionally, Teresa is always very involved with the United Way Campaign and the annual CANstruction team projects that receive local acclaim! As noted by one team member, “Teresa is into every thing. She is just one of those behind the scenes people who never seeks credit for anything they do … just gives from the heart.”

Embracing fitness for charity is a “win-win” as team members improve their health while the charities receive support, recognition, and funds. Tied to our wellness initiatives, this is a perfect combination to support fitness goals while making a difference in our communities!
WELLNESS
Haskell team members love to combine their passion for exercise and camaraderie with an important charitable cause. The events hosted by the American Heart Association certainly fit this description and many offices annually participate in National Walking Day along with local American Heart Walks in September. Last Fall, the Jacksonville office was presented with the “Top Company Award” by the First Coast chapter of the American Heart Association – a first! Led by Molly Keifer, team and family members raised over $14,000 for 2019’s fundraising event. Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the fight against heart disease and stroke.
AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
Annually, team and family members in Oklahoma City participate as runners and volunteers to support the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, Run to Remember. This important event keeps alive the memory of those whose lives were lost or changed forever due to the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995. Benham team members sponsored the water stop located within mile 14 – a very welcome location just past the halfway point. Your support of this great cause means a lot to all involved.
OKLAHOMA CITY MEMORIAL MARATHON
Last November, twenty-eight team members across multiple locations and project sites rode bikes across the east coast of Florida to raise awareness and funds for Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Offering choices of distance during the two-day event, Team Haskell raised $28,190 for the cause and placed #6 out of 77 teams. Will Schaet, team leader, was the #4 overall fundraiser and contributed an incredible $18,495! As in years past, Haskell sponsored a “rest-stop” booth on both days with several volunteers offering encouragement and cheers in addition to hydration. Thank you to every participant and volunteer for cycling toward a world free of MS.
BIKE MS: PGA TOUR CYCLE TO THE SHORE
In the field, Charles Haley has been instrumental in bringing awareness about various health causes on project sites where he works. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month last October, he led a breast cancer awareness initiative in honor of anyone affected by the disease. Haskell team members, subcontractors, and visitors were asked to wear pink safety hardhats and given the opportunity to honor/remember loved ones while sharing a moment of silence. With this terrible disease touching so many, directly or indirectly, we applaud these efforts.
MOUNT ACOSTA CLASSIC
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
For the seventh year in a row, Haskell served as a proud sponsor and venue host of the Mt. Acosta Classic Endurance Race in support of the Jared Bynum Foundation. This annual event is held in memory of our beloved Haskell team member, Jared Bynum, who was a committed runner and triathlete. Championed by several team members, including Marie McMaster, the event has raised more than $70,000 for the foundation that awards college scholarships to deserving students in Jacksonville – a fund created by Jared and his wife, Kelli, before he passed in 2012. Honoring Jared and his incredible spirit have been integral to the success of this event. He was an avid supporter of anything and everything local, therefore the Mt. Acosta Classic strives to keep the “go-local” theme alive and well. Team members who serve on the committee are passionate about giving back to the community in addition to cycling or running. On behalf of the scholarship foundation, thank you for supporting a cause that is changing lives and creating future leaders in our community.

Education and youth enrichment are key to building brilliant futures and prosperous communities. Our culture has been one to seek opportunities to make a positive impact in the lives of local youth. Partnerships with local schools and programs focused on design, engineering, or construction have yielded positive alliances and long-standing friendships with young students.
MENTORING
The ACE Mentor Program of America (ACE), founded in 1994, is an award-winning program designed to attract high school students into pursuing careers in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) profession(s). Three of our office locations are actively involved with the program, and this year, the Jacksonville office hired its second former ACE mentee who recently completed construction studies in college. Program participants are guided through real-life projects that incorporate aspects of design and construction, which gives them well-rounded exposure to the excitement and diverse career paths available in the AEC industry.

Haskell team members partner with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Jacksonville, the community advocate for educational opportunities for underprivileged children, and George Washington Carver Elementary School to host an Architect Barbie Workshop for close to 30 girls, ages 7-9. Using the Barbie brand, activities consist of planning and design exercises that foster a child’s understanding of spatial relationships by asking them to design Barbie’s Dream House.
ARCHITECT BARBIE
Over the past several years, Haskell and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida (BBBSNEFL) have partnered together with the “Beyond School Walls” program – a workplace mentoring program that pairs team members with students for one-to-one mentoring. This partnership not only provides the students with a mentor but exposes them to a positive work environment, new career paths and life goals. Currently working with a STEM-focused high school, the “Littles” typically start the program in their Sophomore year with the idea that the partnership will last through graduation. Once a month, the students come to the office for three hours with planned programming followed by one-on-one mentoring that includes lunch. It is always so much fun to experience the energy.
BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS "BEYOND SCHOOL WALLS"
During National Engineer’s Week, the Atlanta office hosted a STEM event for twenty-three students representing four local high schools. The purpose was to introduce students to multiple engineering disciplines and explore opportunities that might interest them in the future. Engineers delivered presentations focused on mechanical, controls and automation, and system analytics engineering. During the system analytics section, the students were able to experience virtual reality with VR headsets. At the end of the day, each student applied what they learned by building a ping pong ball “catapult” using only pencils and rubber bands. This hands-on activity allowed the student to employ various engineering principles while being very entertained!

In July, Benham team members spent time at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum STEM camp. Participating students learned not only about what happened on April 19, 1995, but about careers that were instrumental in rescue and recovery, such as forensics, engineering, and law enforcement. Our structural engineers shared unique hands-on activities with participants to demonstrate how engineers design buildings to withstand natural and man-made disasters.
OKLAHOMA CITY NATIONAL MEMORIAL & MUSEUM STEM SUMMER CAMPS
A long-time partner with SkillsUSA, Haskell sponsored and volunteered with the SkillsUSA Championships Carpentry Contest in Louisville, Kentucky, where 69 contestants from secondary and post-secondary schools across the nation competed. For ten years, our team has been proud to contribute donations and talent in support of construction vocations. Most recently, David Bates served as Chairman of the competition accompanied by Lance Simons, Brian Roundtree, Tim Mosley, Garrett Thompson, and Cody Yax. The philosophy of the Championships is to reward students for excellence, to involve industry in directly evaluating student performance, and to keep training relevant to employers’ needs.

STEM GOES RED
As cardiovascular disease continues to be the number one killer of women, ensuring that more women are at the forefront of developing science, technology, education, and math (STEM) solutions has never been more imperative. Led by female team members, the Jacksonville office partnered with the American Heart Association for its “STEM Goes Red” event and hosted the engineering breakout session with an extraordinary group of local middle school girls. These future leaders learned about STEM careers and walked away knowing they can make an impact in their world by following others’ footsteps into a STEM career.
“Tiffany [Shaw] and her team were AMAZING! The girls truly loved Haskell’s breakout and left feeling excited about engineering. You have a wonderful group of female leaders and we truly appreciate everything they did to help us make an impact. Thank you both for helping us make this impact and touch so many young girls’ lives on the First Coast.”
ASHLEY PLOTTS DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION
Many team members across the company participated in various activities that incorporate sustainability and environmental awareness in the community. Creating healthy greenspaces and waterways are wonderful ways of connecting people with their natural resources.
SUSTAINABILITY
Every year, H.R. Gray team members spend numerous hours cleaning up their local waterways and parks while encouraging environmental awareness around their beautiful natural resources. In honor of Earth Day, team members volunteered with FACT – Friends of Alum Creek and Tributaries – to plant over 200 tree saplings and remove over 30 bags of trash from Mock Park in Columbus, Ohio. In June, the team participated in the Cuyahoga River Homecoming in Northeast Ohio by putting together “rainsticks” in honor of environmental efforts that cleaned up the waterways and recovered the natural assets of the region’s waters over the past 50 years. Additionally, the team participates annually with the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition’s Canal Cleanup of local trails around the area, including Towpath Trail. Beautifying these byways and parks has given back to the environment and the communities along the way.
OHIO RIVER CLEAN-UPS AND CELEBRATIONS
Northeast Ohio
In early September, more than 150 volunteers braved Florida’s summer heatwave to participate in the USGBC’s 2019 Green Apple Day of Service (GADoS) project at LaVilla School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Florida. This year’s event resulted from a partnership between downtown’s LaVilla School of the Arts and Haskell, along with several educators, parents, students, and Haskell team members. The final creation encompassed the addition of native landscaping to create a pollinator garden, new seating, an interactive art installation, and sustainable education to explain the importance of “green” landscaping and methodologies. Haskell chose to partner with LaVilla for the 2019 GADoS project for many reasons. LaVilla was celebrating its 20th anniversary and had many special events planned to highlight the school’s milestone accomplishment and positive impact in our community. It was also an opportunity to re-engage Haskell as the original design-builder of the school twenty years ago – which made this project even more special!
GREEN APPLE DAY OF SERVICE (GADoS)
Continuing our partnership with the “KampungKu” Project, Haskell APAC again volunteered five team members from the Malaysia office to travel with Ecotourism & Conservation Society of Malaysia (ECOMY) and Veritas Design Group, a Malaysian architecture firm, to serve communities of indigenous people in Pahang, Malaysia. The two-day journey involved travel by boat and hikes on land to deliver and set-up 400 solar lights to several indigenous families in the Kampung Yong village. The team also visited two villages from prior projects – Kampung Aur and Kampung Dedari – to perform maintenance checks and replace any defective units. Our team reported feeling very blessed to serve a cause they deeply care about – the indigenous villages and the wonderful families that are embracing renewable energy, social advocacy, and education for their children.
