COMMUNITY SUPPORT
You personally worked on the two houses we built for Habitat for Humanity in 2023, and Haskell provided the largest corporate workforce for builds in this region. How does this commitment by our Haskell team members speak to our values?
Haskell’s commitment to the United Way across all our offices nationwide is broad and deep, and 2023 was another record-setting campaign. What does this mean to the communities we serve?
And it’s not just the value of Service. It speaks to all four – Team, Excellence, Service and Trust. Many volunteer as part of a team. They’re certainly in service to others. They’re sharing their commitment to excellence. And they’re building trusted relationships with each other across the organization. We’re proud to offer every team member four hours each month of paid time off for volunteerism. The 45,000 hours volunteered by Haskell team members, generally outside their everyday responsibilities, speaks volumes about who we are as an organization.
It’s remarkable, and it’s an organization that has seized the opportunity to do that. To have the resources to be in multiple locations around the world and have a global impact, to be able to improve lives in different countries, communities and neighborhoods – that’s what we’re doing. It’s humbling when you think of it in those terms.
Haskell team members worked more than 45,000 volunteer hours in 2023. How do those opportunities to serve together support and reflect our culture?
Service is a Haskell core value, and giving back to the communities that we work in and live in is a long-standing tradition. With 23 office locations and numerous project sites around the world, which can be 100 more locations at any given time, it provides us with the unique opportunity to really make an impact and change lives. That’s what the core values of Team, Excellence, Service and Trust are about and what the core value of Service speaks to.
The Haskell-Habitat for Humanity relationship has existed for 30 years. We’ve built 27 homes, and in 2024 we’ll build Nos. 28 and 29. We’ve provided 22,000 volunteer hours since 2015 – 22,000 volunteer hours! – and we’re recognized as their most active corporate volunteer partner. That’s pretty remarkable stuff and I know it’s very satisfying for our team members. The service relates to what we do, and to be able to build something so tangible and provide for those who need it most is pretty amazing.
Preston (Haskell III) started Haskell’s relationship with the United Way decades ago, and it’s a fantastic relationship. Again, it speaks much to our core values and who we are as an organization and allows us as individuals to have the opportunity to be positive change agents in whatever community we happen to live in. Every day, we talk about coming to work and ensuring that we’re bettering ourselves and the company. Through the United Way campaign across the enterprise, we can better our communities. So, the relationship is strong, and it’s something we should all be proud of.
It speaks directly to our strong culture and to our core values. And it’s not just the value of Service. It speaks to all four – Team, Excellence, Service and Trust. Many volunteer as part of a team. They’re certainly in service to others. They’re sharing their commitment to excellence. And it’s not just the value of Service. It speaks to all four – Team, Excellence, Service and Trust. Whether it’s Toys for Tots in Idaho, creating kits of personal items for the disabled and elderly in Colombia or refurbishing classrooms in Malaysia, Haskell and its team members touch thousands with their good works. Could you reflect on that? Could you ever have imagined leading such an organization?
2023 United Way Campaign Results
ANOTHER RECORD YEAR
With a United Way campaign theme of “All Together We CAN,” Haskell team members most certainly did! Led by Co-Chairs Janel LeGard, Senior Design Manager – Private Facilities AE, and Jonathan Peters, Director of Preconstruction Services, team members across the U.S. and Latin America raised a record $306,000-plus, with nearly 30% participation throughout the October 2023 campaign. Each office participated in its own unique fundraising events and community service projects. Charlotte built a one-of-a-kind nine-hole Mini Golf course throughout the fifth floor, held chili and brownie competitions and ended the campaign with trivia and "bevvies.” Dallas packed food kits for City House, which serves displaced individuals, and Livermore and Jacksonville both packed hygiene kits for local distribution to disadvantaged residents. Team members in St. Louis built children’s dressers, held a school supplies drive and took their chili cook-off to new heights.

Habitat for Humanity
In communities all over the world, Habitat for Humanity partners with people to help them build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. In Charlotte, along with a $5,000 donation, team members provided sweat equity in a Habitat Homes being built for the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. They began building the outbuilding from scratch, painted all interior trim, cleaned all the windows of stickers and construction dirt, built two mailboxes and cemented their posts. In Jacksonville, where HabiJax is considered one of the most successful Habitat affiliates in the United States, having provided homeownership and other housing services to over 2,300 families, team members from Haskell’s headquarters completed their 26th and 27th Habitat houses and in 2024 will build Nos. 28 and 29.
Haskell's Annual Scholarship Program
Twenty children of Haskell team members received the 2023 Haskell Company Scholarship award. The four-year academic scholarships totaling $6,000 are awarded for undergraduate studies at accredited colleges, universities and post-secondary vocational and trade schools. The Scholarship Committee reviews candidate applications and chooses recipients based on criteria that include grade-point average (GPA), class rank, strength of academic program, school activities, sports involvement, outside work, educational goals and career aspirations. In addition, each candidate submits three letters of recommendation. “We are pleased to be able to support the children of our team members by assisting them in achieving their educational goals,” said David Thaeler, Haskell Chief Human Resources Officer. “This year, we were fortunate to add several of our international team members’ children to our scholarship recipient ranks as they pursue their career aspirations.” Haskell has awarded more than $422,000 in scholarships to more than 190 of its team members’ college-age children since the program started in 2003.

Service Around the Globe
The core value of Service is strong throughout Haskell, and that is certainly true for the International team. Team members in the Asia-Pacific and Latin America regions were incredibly generous with their time and talents in their communities. Here are just a few of the many examples. Eighteen members of the Malaysia team spent 144 hours replacing broken drywall, painting the walls and ceiling in two classrooms and painting the lobby walls at the Yayasan Chow Kit (YCK) building. In the Philippines, the Alabang Design Center and Business Unit volunteered to distribute school supplies, medical supplies and hygiene products to selected ninth-grade students at Sagad High School. They also donated working materials for teachers and provided the school printers. Fourteen Mexico City team members collected and donated 575 kilos of food to the BAMX Food Bank of Mexico Toluca Headquarters. BAMX is a non-profit organization that operates 53 food banks catering to Mexico’s disadvantaged.
In Colombia, members of the DHL Cota project team in Cundinamarca donated 20 kits containing a pair of socks, scarf, caps and personal hygiene items, 20 breakfasts and 20 desserts to the Foundation for the Love of Jesus Headquarters of the Holy Trinity Social Work, while - also donating 1 million Colombian pesos to purchase groceries.
Community Support Spotlight
Livermore Team
The team members in Haskell’s Livermore, California, office are known for their palpable sense of camaraderie, and one of the things that unites them is their passion for community service. “We know it’s part of the Haskell culture to promote volunteer service, and we do a service project every quarter,” said Scott Rothi, Private Facilities AE Design Director and the Livermore office leader. “We’ll get together as a staff and people will throw out ideas, and then our office administrator books them for us. We’re a remote office with 27 people, so we make sure that we always have something to give people an opportunity to engage and get together. The service events serve part of that goal, as well.” In 2023, they took part in no fewer than a half-dozen service projects, from preparing gardens for the upcoming season at Sunflower Hill, a facility where adults with disabilities work, live, learn and thrive as part of the community, to packing over 4000 meals that included rice, fortified crushed soy, a blend of 6 dehydrated vegetables, and 21 vitamins and minerals for Kids Against Hunger.
St. Paul Team
LEADERS OF TOMORROW - MENTORING
Four St. Paul team members shared information about themselves, their beginnings in engineering and their work with Haskell during the Leaders of Tomorrow event conducted by Hispanic Advocacy and Community Empowerment Through Research (HACER), the only advocacy-driven, Latino-specific research organization in the Upper Midwest. Each member of the Haskell team was pleased to speak about themselves, how they got involved in engineering and their work. Kevin Vazquez gave a short presentation on becoming an engineer in Mexico and the U.S. and on basic concepts of civil and structural engineering. The event also included a hands-on activity where students were asked to apply basic engineering principles. They were taught to make truss bridges built with K’Nex stronger and test them by applying loads and seeing the improvement in their strength and stiffness. It concluded with questions from students. Since its founding in 1988, HACER has evolved to serve Latines in Minnesota through research, focus groups and programs.

Project Alpha
Southeast Idaho Toys for Tots
Haskell team members become part of the fabric of the communities they serve, and this year our Project Alpha team showcased this commitment extraordinarily. Led by Senior Safety Coordinator Tim Riddell and his wife, Shelly, team members from the Production Line 7, Cold Storage and Wastewater units came together on behalf of the 2023 Southeast Idaho Toys for Tots campaign. Their efforts were inspiring, gathering about $3,500 worth of toys to bring joy to children across Bannock, Bingham, Caribou, Franklin, Oneida and Power counties and on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. The Riddells have led collection efforts for nearly a decade, and this year marked their largest donation yet. The spirit of giving extended beyond the Haskell team, with many subcontractors supporting this heartwarming cause.

Aljeane Salazar
Assistant Project Manager IIPhilippines
Official in Charge
Recently awarded Haskell’s Living the Values Award, Aljeane Salazar shares her passion for community and youth development in many ways. She is committed to making the world a better place for disadvantaged youth in her area of the Philippines. Serving as a “Barangay Kagawad,” which is an elected community counselor, she oversees youth sports programs in her district. Aljeane recently organized a charity for a disadvantaged elementary school and helped raise over 30,000 pesos to buy sporting goods and supplies for the students. As part of the event, she planned an entire day to distribute the purchased materials while having fun with the kids – even organizing a friendly basketball game between the best local players and Haskell team members. During her free time, she also oversees a badminton program for disadvantaged teen girls by teaching them how to play and providing the equipment – much of which she purchases with her own money. Representing the spirit of Haskell’s values, Aljeane certainly embodies Team, Excellence, Service and Trust, both at work and in service to local disadvantaged youth.

Robert Jackson
Director – Transportation and CivilInfrastructure | Jacksonville, Florida
Industry Passion Translates to Youth
When Robert Jackson joined Haskell in 2019, he brought a wealth of industry knowledge and experience. He has led several professional organizations focused on engineering, including President of the Florida Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Jacksonville Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society (FES). His passion for sharing the benefits of an engineering career has also been extended to the classroom and youth mentoring programs. Robert has served as a guest lecturer at his alma mater, the University of Florida, and with the engineering program at the University of North Florida. However, the organizations that bring him the most joy involve youth mentoring programs such as ACE Mentoring and Mentoring Families and Kids, Inc. The students in ACE Mentoring are inspired to learn from Robert, and they benefit from his knowledge, encouragement and sense of humor. This also translates to fellow mentors who have expressed admiration for his commitment and connection with these students, which he delivers with gracious ease. With many years of mentoring local youth, he has seen numerous students grow up to pursue careers in the AEC industry thanks to his efforts.
